Watford 0 – 12 Belsize Park - EDF Junior Vase 16-09-2006

Watford RFCMatch Report - Saturday 16th September
EDF Junior Vase Preliminary Round
Watford 0 – 12 Belsize Park

Watford fell at the first hurdle in this year’s EDF Junior Vase to North London side Belsize Park.  Watford still finding their feet this season following last year’s success league campaign and missing a number of key players through injury and unavailability saw this game slip from their grasp in the last ten minutes of the first half.

In the first 30 minutes of a scrappy game Watford lodged themselves deep in the Belsize half dominating the proceedings but failing to convert territory supremacy into points. Watford’s lighter and mobile pack came out firing on all cylinders securing good ball but  their backs failed to take  advantage of a wanting Belsize defence.  Ten minutes to half time Watford for once found themselves on the defensive as Belsize kicked through, a penalty try was awarded for blocking the chasing Belsize player on route to a “certain” try, converted from beneath the posts 7 nil to the away side.  Belsize seized on Watford’s disappointment and uncertainty as half-time approached, with Watford frantically defending in their own 22 a clearance kick, under pressure, was charged down by the Belsize’s open-side flanker who gathered the loose ball to score close to the post, conversion missed 12 – 0 at the break.

The second half was a reverse of the first with Watford mainly on the defensive. Belsize crossed the Watford try line twice but each time were thwarted by dogged defensive work keeping the ball from being grounded.  Despite Watford ringing the changes with four replacements during this half it was only as the half drew to a close that they started to make inroads into the Belsize defence which by this time was fagging but all came a little too late for a disappointing Watford side.
