Watford U16’s 34 - 17 Ealing B U16’s - 24/09/06

Herts Middlesex U16 Div 4
Last seasons U14’s are now fielding a joint age group in the Herts and Middlesex U16’s Division 4. The first match of the new season started with a home win against Ealing B. After a cagey first five minutes Watford increasingly gained in confidence and although possession was shared took the game into the Ealing half. The first score of the match came after 23 minutes when Ealing conceded a penalty for tackling a player without the ball. Ben Green duly slotted the kick between the posts.

Watford continued to press forward and were rewarded when Matt Williams crossed the line for the first try of the new season, and Ben Green increased the advantage with a conversion. The match was not all one-sided and after 33 min Ealing scored a try after a short line-out, which was duly converted. Watford increased their lead with a try in the last play of the half through Will McManners. The half time score being 15-7 to Watford.

Watford started the 2nd half and within 2 minutes Will raced through to score his 2nd try, the conversion being missed. There then followed a 10 minute period of even play with good rucking by Watford and good line-outs by both teams, Ealing came close to scoring on a number of occasions, but were kept out by some resolute defending. However after 15 min of the 2nd half, Ealing crossed the line in the corner for a try, but missed the conversion from an acute angle.

Watford responded and Stuart Menzie scored Watford’s 4th try with Ben again converting. Although they were 15 points down Ealing never gave up and scored another try 5 minutes later. With the score at 27-17 the match was not over as a contest until with 2 minutes left after a good run by Richard Munday who chasing his own kick pressured the backs and Tristan Button collected the loose ball and scored the final Try. Ben scored his 3rd conversion of the match.

After a fine run Watford crossed the line again with the last play, but couldn’t ground the ball and the opportunity was lost. A special mention must go to Myles Toon and Ben for their kicking and Stuart, Toby and Sam Chick for sterling forward play, and Warren Dunsford and Will for some good forward runs.
