Watford 17 – 23 Old Tottonians |
|
Watford went into this home league game against Old Tottonians looking to get back to winning ways after their previous games defeat. The away team went on the attack straight from the kick off and managed to score a converted try before the home team had even touched the ball. Direct from the restart Watford attacked the blind side though number 8 Mark Patterson who fed winger Sven Ossowski and after making ground he was tackled just short of the try line. He had the presence of mind to pop the ball up the ever supporting prop and Captain Peter Nelson. The conversion was missed by scrum half Simon Maney to give a score line of 7 – 5 to Old Tottonians after only 5 minutes.
The rest of the 1st half was like watching a tennis match with the ball going from end to end with the neither team being able to break away from each other. The next score came from Watford’s indiscipline and the Old Tottonians kicked the penalty to make the score 10 – 5 to the away team. Watford managed to score a further un-converted try by winger Ossowski to make the score 10 – 10. Further indiscipline from the home team, which was to be a telling a factor for the rest of the game led to the away team kicking the penalty to lead 13 – 10 at half time. The home team started the second half by actually keeping hold of the ball and recycling the phases. This led them to make inroads into the away teams half. An injury to fly half Ian Butcher led to winger Jamie Traxon moving to stand off and Jon Portway coming on to the wing. From a ruck in the away teams 22 Traxon was able to dummy to the supporting Patterson and score under the posts. The conversion by Maney made the score 17 – 13 to Watford. That was to be the home teams final score of the game as missed tackles and indiscipline let the home team score a converted try and kick a further penalty. Although Watford tried hard to get a further score wrong decision making and indiscipline cost them the chance to snatch a game that in reality they never deserved to win. The final whistle went with the score 23 – 17 to Old Tottonians. The relief from the way team was in contrast to the stunned realisation of the home team that they had thrown away another game. Watford hope to end their losing run this week with an away league game at Saracens Amateurs. Team: Hickey, Dunlop, Nelson(c), Sharpe, Stevens, Bridge, Chapman, Patterson, Maney, Butcher, Traxon, Cox, Van Bosch, Ossowski, Jenkins.
