Watford 55 - 24 Tring - Saturday 3rd February 2007 |
|
Watford went into the game buoyed by the previous weeks league victory but aware that the Tring team albeit being their 3rd team would still be tough opposition. From the kick off it was obvious that there was going to be a clash of styles. The home team were looking to move the ball about and use their pacey backs whilst Tring were happy to keep the ball tight and use their forwards. The away team manage to get the first score of the game and this stung Watford into life. Some excellent recycling of the ball by the forwards led to the ball being passed to winger Scott Dunbar to score the first of his 2 tries for the game. The conversion by scrum half Simon Maney made the score 7 - 5 to Watford. Watford realised that the way they were going to win this game was for the forwards to do the hard work and let the backs run at their opponents. 5 more tries in the half from winger Dunbar, number 8 Mark Patterson with his first of the season, full back Peter Jenkins and 3 conversions by Maney made the score 38 - 12 to Watford at half time.
The second half was a tighter affair with Tring keeping the ball with their forwards and resolute defending by Watford kept Tring at bay. Tring eventually managed to score which was converted to make the score 38 - 19 to the home team. Being a friendly and a memorial to Bryan O'Regan who passed away last year there were plenty of substitutes that wanted to get onto the pitch. The glut of substitutions disturbed Watford's flow for a while, but it soon clicked back into place with flanker Dave Mitchell scoring 2 tries, wingers Sven Ossowski and Simon Tucker with one try each either side of a Tring score and 2 conversions by Maney before he went off left the final score at 55 - 24 to Watford. Watford play Harrow this weekend before the important league fixture the following week against Old Haberdashers. Team: Hickey, Hicks, Nelson, Sharpe, Stevens, Mitchell, De Klerk, Patterson, Maney, Butcher, Portway, Van Bosch, Cox, Dunbar, Jenkins.
