Watford 45 - 7 Old Haberdashers - 17-2-2007 |
|
Watford went into this home game looking for a second successive league win buoyed by recent results. The game did not start the way the home team wanted. From almost their first attack Old Haberdashers recycled the ball to their backs and some sloppy tackling led to a converted try and a score line of 0 - 7 to the away team after a few minutes. Whilst the conversion was being taken captain Peter Nelson reminded everybody that they had to play our game and not the oppositions. Watford started to claw their way back into the game through their forwards and it didn't take long for them to start dominating their opponents and score their first try of the game through number 8 Mark Patterson. The conversion was missed by scrum half Simon Maney to give a score line of 5 - 7 to Old Haberdashers. The rest of the half continued in the same vein with Watford's forwards getting on top of Old Haberdashers and 2 further tries were scored, one through hooker Mark Hicks which was unconverted by Maney and a 2nd of the game for Patterson, which was converted by Maney to give a half time score line of 17 - 7 to the home team.At half time captain Nelson asked for more effort and to not let their opponents back into the game. Coach Ian Matthews reminded everyone that the first half was over now and to start the second half as if the score was 0 - 0. The second half started with the pack again taking complete control especially in the set piece with Old Haberdashers electing for any form of restart except a scrum. This was in part due to the Watford pack driving Haberdashers back nearly 15 metres for another try for Patterson which was converted by Maney. With the forwards taking control quick ball was being recycled and with Man of the Match Ian Butcher, having moved into the fly half position at half time from full back, controlling things and massive clearing kicks by centre Ivan Kennedy, this meant that any time Old Haberdashers did look like making ground they were never allowed to get a further score in the game. A quick tap penalty by player/coach Ian Matthews led to his first score for his new club which was converted by Maney. This made the score 31 - 7 to Watford who were now looking to score as many points as possible to help their points difference which could be all important at the end of the season. After more good work by the pack, notably the front five of Trevor Hickey, Hicks, Nelson, Dave Mitchell and Matt Sharpe, Patterson was able to score his 4th try of the game. The conversion by Maney made the score 38 - 7 to Watford. With the game drawing to a close substitute winger Sven Ossowski scored the home teams 7th try of the game after chasing the ball and getting a lucky bounce he was able to score the try untouched under the posts. The conversion by Maney made the final score 45 - 7 to Watford. Watford will be looking to continue their fine current form when they play table topping Old Streetonians at home this Saturday.
