

Watford Rugby Club was formed in 1973 following the demise of West Herts RFC and Sun Postal Rugby Club. Our Club House and ground is at Knutsford Playing Fields, Radlett Road, Watford. The Club gained the Seal of Approval and Club Mark accreditations in 2007 and continue to hold these accreditations. We are an extremely friendly club spending as much time, effort and money on socialising as we do on training and playing Rugby. Our club has an extensive range of youth teams ranging from under 7s to under 17s and senior sides for those over 17. We provide quality rugby coaching and playing opportunities for young and old rugby players alike in our area. This allows player to enjoy a safe, fun, learning and playing environment in order that they can develop their skills, keep fit and active and have fun.

Watford played Quintin in their rearranged Herts/Middx 3 league game this week following lasts week’s game being frozen out. Watford securing their first league points of 2009. Quintin started much the better side in the opening quarter scoring two tries and with one convertion took a 12-0 lead. Watford clawed their way back as James Betteley, captain for the day and Man of the Match, scored his first try of the day beneath the posts, conversion missed Watford were 7 points adrift at 12-5 to the visitors.
Watford resumed league action this week with a hard fought but ultimately well deserved 15-13 victory over visitors St. Nicholas Old Boys. The victory was even more impressive due to the wholesale changes made and players playing out of position due to mass unavailability’s.
Watford travelled to Quintin with a much changed team due to injuries and unavailability’s. With traffic causing problems the kick off was delayed for 15 mins. In what was a very scrappy game, with more scrums in one game than most of the season so far.
Watford played Old Merchant Taylors in a friendly fixture arranged when Hatfield cried off due to injury. Both teams fielding a mixture of 1st and 2nd team players, The visitors play their rugby 2 leagues above Watford and were recovering from last weeks loss by 115 – 0 to Hemel Hempstead. This game was always going to be a testing game, especially with Watford missing 7 regular 1st teamers. The opening score of the game went with play and went to the visitors with an unconverted try to lead 5-0. Watford fought back and their first score of the game came from debutant winger John Toy, who score wide out. The conversion from scrum half Simon Maney made the score 7-5 to Watford.
Watford moved up to second place in the league after a hard fought 19 – 5 victory over Cuffley. The battle in the forwards was as tough as was anticipated but the home team managed to win this vital area. The first try was scored by outside centre James Betteley after quick ball was recycled by the forwards and feed out to the backs. Betteley made an outside break and showed pace and strength to score the opening points. The conversion was missed to make the score 5 – 0 to Watford. The rest of the half continued with the forwards working hard to give good ball to the backs but good defence by the away team made the half time score 5 – 0 to Watford.
