Watford 1st XV 35 - 5 Wasps - 22.10.05

Watford resumed their league campaign this weekend after 1 win and 1 lose, knowing that a win was of vital importance to their league aspirations. The home team started at a great pace and were camped in Wasps Cubans half of, waiting for the first score of the game. This came from a scrum in the left side of the Wasps 22. Mark Patterson, making his first full start for the club, picked and went from the base of the scrum and passed to scrum half Maney who feed Tom Kiely, who came in off his wing at great pace, took the ball and burst through two tackles and touched the ball down to the left of the posts.
Maney converted to make the score 7 - 0 to the home team. Shortly after this Kiely had to leave the field after a heavy tackle by 2 defenders caused an injury to his shoulder/collar bone area. The score stayed this way until half time due to some resolute defending particularly by man of the match centre David Ross.

Direct from the kick off the Watford pack took hold of the game and with great power from the from the front row and second row the scrums became Watfords. From these Watford managed to score a push over try, by number 8 Patterson. This was converted by Maney to make the score 14 - 0 to Watford.

Watford then lost concentration despite the best efforts of flanker Mitchell, and Wasps took a quick tap penalty and scored a try under the posts. This was unconverted to make the score 14 - 5 to Watford. Whilst this conversion was taking place club captain Nelson read the riot act. This had the desired effect as from the kick off Watfords pack tore into Wasps. This resulted in 2 more push over tries for number 8 Patterson, but was a great testament to the power for the second row of Moore and Stevens. Maney converted both of these to make the score 28 - 5 to Watford.

Watford were denied 2 father tries to winger Portway and number 8 Patterson by the referee. By this point the away team were ready for the final whistle. The final score of the game saw fly half Butcher feed Maney, who passed to centre Traxon who attacked a hole from just outside the Wasps 22. He was tackled just short by their full back but had the presence of mind to pop the ball to the supporting Maney, who reached the ball before front rowers Hickey & Hicks to touch the ball down under the posts. Maney converted himself and the final whistle went, to leave the score line at 35 - 5 to Watford, who hope to continue to keep their league campaign on line when the travel away to Southgate this saturday.
