Pinner & Grammarians 10 - 35 Watford - 10-12-2005 |
|
Watford took on Pinner & Grammarians this week in what was the half way point of the league season. Watford took the lead early on with a superb individual try to winger Van Klerk, who showed great strength and pace to beat the defence and score his first try for the club. The returning fly half Butcher, who took over the kicking duties for the missing injured Maney, took the conversion and coolly slotted it over to make the score 7 – 0 to the away team.
On the home teams first visit into the Watford half they were awarded a penalty which they kicked to make the score 7 – 3 to Watford. The Watford pack showed great strength against their opponents and managed to disrupt the home teams scrum time and time again and the back row of Patterson, Mitchell and the returning Ossowski were able to secure good ball for the backs to try and use, but it seemed that the final pass would not stick and went to ground. The home team took a shock half time lead through a hotly disputed penalty try awarded to the home team on their next visit to the Watford 22. The ref shouted hands out of the ruck and when this did not happen went under the posts which made the conversion easy. A drab first half due to the heavy conditions and a greasy ball ended with the scores at 10 – 7 to the home team. A half time roasting from coach Mealing seemed to have the desired effect as Watford took control of the game. The forwards started to take real control with the back row running hard and being ably supported by the second rows of Stevens and Sharpe and retuning hooker Hassett and captain Nelson. The backs were able to use the good ball being provided and with scrum half Dawe feeding Butcher the centres were making progress every time they had the ball. The first score of the half came from number 8 Patterson who scored his 8th try of the season after following Butcher who had made neat break and with only the full back to beat, passed to the supporting backrower. With Butcher adding the conversion the score was 14 – 10 to the away team. This gave Watford even more confidence and they were happy to keep the ball in hand as often as possible. Good handling from all involved lead to the next 3 trys for the centres Cox who scored one, and the returning Ross who scored two, although this was in part to the unselfish Man of the Match Cox who handed Ross the last try of the game on a plate after making a superb break. With all three trys converted by the excellent Butcher, the score was 35 – 10 to the away team. Excellent defence kept the home team scoreless for the half, and with other results going Watfords way, they enter the Christmas period and half way point of the league campaign joint top with Saracens Amateurs. Team: Vincent. Sedgley, Nelson, Stevens, Sharpe, Ossowski, Mitchell, Patterson, Dawe, Butcher, Portway, Cox, Ross, De Klerk, Van Bosch. Sub Hassett for Sedgley. |
