Watford Rugby 19 - 14 Borehamwood Rugby

Watford continued their winning streak this week with a hard fought victory at home against a determined Borehamwood side. The home side kicked off with a strong wind behind them, but it was the visitors that were strangely doing all the kicking. Watford were trying to play with their usual confidence and domination from the forwards, so it was with some surprise that the visitors took the lead against the run of play. A converted try under the posts gave the away team a 7 - 0 lead.

This seemed to give Watford the extra spur they needed and eventually full back Peter Jenkins wound back the years with a fine individual break and score under the posts. With scrum half Simon Maney adding the conversion the scores were now level at 7 - 7. The Watford pack were now getting on top of their opponents, particularly in the scrum, where Clarke Jenner was playing his first game of the season at hooker. He was being ably supported by the reliable front row of Trevor Hickey and captain Peter Nelson and the second row of Jon Stevens and Matt Sharpe.

Watford were starting to secure their own line out ball through flanker Tom Kiely, who was outstanding on the day in particularly in defence. Watford would have gone into half time in the lead, if it were not for an unfortunate drop of the ball by flanker Sven Ossowski once he had crossed the try line after good work by Number 8 Mark Patterson. The half time score was 7 - 7 and with the teams changing ends it was obvious that the first score of the half would be critical, especially as the visitors now had use of the strong wind. Direct from the kick off the ball was spun out to the backs and great interplay by centres Peter Cox and Quintas Van Bosch led to the 2 exchanging passes several times to beat the defence and allow Van Bosch to score under the posts without a visiting player touching the ball. The conversion by Maney meant that Watford now led 14 - 7.

This seemed to knock the confidence of the visitors which allowed Watford to dictate play and get a great deal of ball. Fly half Andy Kiely played most of the game incapacitated by a leg injury, but he still managed to feed his back line as often as he could. With the forwards securing good ball, full back Jenkins was entering the line as often as possible and the overlap was created giving wingers Jon Portway and Leon De Klerk lots of ball. Unfortunately for them the cover defence just managed to get to them to stop them scoring.

Watfords scrum was now completely dominant, and the next score came from one such scrum. Hooker Jenner managed to take one against the head, and the pack managed to get a good nudge and wheel to allow number 8 Patterson to break from the back and dive under the defence to score his accustomed try. With the conversion being missed kicking into a head wind, the score was now 19 - 7 to Watford.

The final score of the game came from the visitors after a kick and chase and with the conversion being added the final score was 19 - 14 to Watford. Watford are at home this weekend, whilst the second team are at home against Fullerians in the Merit Cup. It is also the last Vice Presidents day for Watford, with all former members welcomed back for this special day, so it promises to be a day of celebration, as the league season ends that day and the club will be looking to celebrate in their promotion in style.
