Hendon 7's tournament, 2006 - Big Trev Report

Watford Rugby Club Sevens team showed yet again how much we have improved this year. The team had been hand picked by the management to provide a range of fitness, speed, endurance and talent. Quintas, Coxy, Butch, Gavin, Pete, Matt, Lean, Tom, Craig and Mandy showed up! The first game v. Old Millhilllians did not start well with the old boys taking the lead. This proved very quickly to our guys that it was not going to be a stroll in the park. With this awakening we started to use our strengths and moved the ball around. With a late try we won 17-12.

After an hours wait, we were then told that our next opponents had withdrawn, this meant another wait of over an hour to our next game. In this time we watched many of the other teams and we could see that they were well prepared and had clearly been practising for the sevens. Also a surprisingly high number of foreigns ringers seemed to be included in the teams!

Our next game was v. Old Verulamiums, who were one of the favourites at the start. They showed us how the game should be played. Speed of thought, good hands and rapid wingers. By the time we woke up in this one we were 3 tries down. Final score 38-12.

This result put us out of the cup but into the Plate Semi Final. This was against Sudbury Springboks, who we had watched earlier and hoped we would not play.

After yet another hour long wait we set off at a very fast pace. We took on board that if we moved the ball quickly and did not take contact we had a chance. With some excellent running, especially by our Man of the Tournament, Quintas, backed up with every tackle being brutal we were triumphant at 27-10. Bring on the final.

After yet another hour + long wait we kicked off against Semi Finalist losers Hendon (not quite sure of how this worked as Enfield had to go home?!).

Hendon had massive support, and try as we could, they proved to be too lucky. Not only getting into the final, but they found us to be generous in our tackles. We did not however give up at any stage and fought till the end eventually losing 31-21.

The day was very long, the games were quick but we reached yet another final and made sure that people will now think of Watford as a force.

Bring on next year!
