Watford 2nd XV bounced back after two narrow league losses to secure a well deserved win of 24-10 away to Datchworth RFC.
Not that long ago, in a place not that far away (Datchworth), Watford2nd XV set about righting some wrongs of the last two weeks. The Watford pack (that wretched hive of scrums and villainy), rumbled up the park, with Luke Bee’s, Steve Hill and Gary ”Obi Wan” Bridge making some fine ball carrying runs. Some considered our storm-trooper Mark Hill a little short for a Scrum half, but he bossed his forwards, and well secured ball meant he could ship it out fast. Some great link up play between Luke “Skywalker” Creed and Sean “Solo” Silver meant they could off load it to TJ "3PO" Bernarius, some say he’s a winger that made the kessel run in less than 12 parsecs, and you could well believe it! He shot down the line to run in Watford’s first try! Which was converted buy our ewok-esqe front row kicker Sanchez “Wicket” Philpott. 7-0. The rucks were hotly contested by both sides, Georgio “Sarlacc” PITsialis and Richard “Sith” Munday were like a phantom menaces around the pitch hassling at the beak downs. The intense pressure from Watford meant Datchworth gave away a penalty, which was kickable for Sanchez, and he duly proton torpedoed it between the posts. 10-0. This fired Datchworth up, who threw everything at us, Watford soaked it up, never missing a tackle, but something had to give andWatford finally slipped up awarding Datchworth a penalty, which they slotted with ease to bring the score to 10-3 half time.
Datchworth started the second half with new hope, but soon Watford strikes back, Coach/Fly Half Adam “Yoda” Creed said “Up our game we should. Win, we can”, and that’s just what we did, hard work from Jack Stevens, and cutting runs by Alex “Harrison” Ford and a break by Jacob “Jar Jar” Harris, meant Luke C, could run one over the line. Hokey winds and light rain, were no match for the good blaster on our side, and Sanchez converted another, 17-3. Number 8 Paul “Chewie” Godfrey on top form, went on another of his trademark rampaging runs, but was stopped short of the line, obviously no-one had been told you got to “let the wookie win”. Some dynamic play from our backs, Steve Lewis, Dean Goward et al, lead to Sean Silver scoring an excellent try forWatford, to be converted again in a master class of kicking by Sanchez. 24-3.
In the last 10, Datchworth dug deep, and went all out. One mistake is all it takes and Datchworth capitalised managing to put one over the line, in a valiant effort in the dying minutes of the game. Making the final score at 24-10 toWatford.
