Watford knew that the Hertford team would try to keep it tight as in the past they have had the edge in the forward 8, with their heavier and more experienced pack. This led to Watford streamlining their performance into great displays of running and support rugby.
This was how Watford’s first try came about, with good hands offloading finally into hat trick hero T.J Bernarius’ grasp, allowing him to scoot over the line and touch down.
This early score set the pace for Watford and they continued to dominate in the tight and the loose for the rest of the game. It was a game where Watford played to their potential and were able to implement some of the moves and show the flair that they enjoy playing with.
The majority of the trys came from swift hands leading to an overlap that was fully exploited by Watford’s wingers T.J and James Braun, with the boot of Mcgee ensuring that the points never stopped trickling into Watford’s pockets throughout the game.
2 well secured set pieces were capitalised upon by Gary Bridge, the veteran No.8, who managed to steer what is becoming a Watford trademark move from the oppositions 22 to over their try line.
MOTM Aaron Connolly also managed to cross the whitewash to secure himself Man of the Match, as the youngster hadn’t stopped moving and attacking the opposition all game.
Captain Andy Lee said “Today was a day when everything clicked for the 2nd team squad. Whilst we are getting good results, we need to remain grounded and ensure that we continue in this vein until the end of the season.”
With this victory, Watford progress to the semi final stage of the Merit Cup, playing Amersham and Chiltern 4ths at home on the 26th March.
