Saracens Scythed Down (George Returns) | Watford 2nds 43 – 10 Saracens’ Amateurs 2nds

Man of the Match:

Watford 2nds season finally kick-off with their first win of the season with a comprehensive victory of Saracens’ Amateurs 2nds.  This awaited  victory being engineered in the later half of the first half and executed in the second period.

For the first 20 minutes Saracens were the stronger side as Watford’s new look team and players came to terms with each other.  Saracens deservedly took the lead with an unconverted try after 20 minutes and it looked like Watford would struggle again.  Slowly Watford began to come to terms with what lay ahead of them and their forwards started to dominate.  It was their forward domination in the last 20 minutes of the first half that set their stall out for the rest of the game. Watford deservedly drew level after 30 minutes with a try from prop Gary Wilson and took the lead with the last play of the first half when Captain George Hicks, returning from suspension imposed last season, powered over close to the post for a converted try for a 12 – 5 lead at half time.

The second half saw Saracens tire as Watford’s fitness pressed home their advantage and with Watford’s back line solid in defence Saracens found it hard to break through and were drained as Watford scored 5 tries with three conversions in the second half, Saracens replying with one unconverted try.  The pick of Watford’s tries came from two re-start kick-offs.  The first following Saracens only second half try; the re-start kick reach the 10 meter line and bounced back to flanker Chris Jenkins who scythed though the waiting Saracens forwards to off load the ball on the five meter line to supporting winger Thomas Thompson who cut inside to score his 1st try for the club. Other 2nd half tries were scored by – debutant No 8 Paul Fagan, Centre Scott Mills and veteran hooker Mark Bennett. Watford’s last try came from Gary Bridge who received the ball from a Saracens re-start cut through a drained Saracens’ defence with a quick interchange of passes finally scored himself. Fly-half Perry Naylor adding two points with his fourth conversion with the last kick of the match as Watford secured a well executed victory.

Next week Watford 1st are Home to Cuffley in a Herts & Middx 3 league encounter and the 2nds travel up the A41 to play local rivals Hemel Hempstead 4ths in a Merit Table match
