Watford 2nd XV 54 – 15 Hertford 6th XV

Man of the Match: TJ

Points flowed like the Colne in the first half, with tries coming in from the following, Mcgee, Bernarius, Lee, Hill and Chauham.  Excellent spot kicking from Tom Mcgee once again put the hosts into a firm lead when the half time whistle blew.

Unfortunately, this lead appeared to have altered the Watford mindset and a lot of the hunger was lost in the second half.  Hertford showed a great “never say die” attitude to fight their way into dominance of the game for the majority of the final quarter of the game.  Tight picking and going from their heavier pack led to them camping inside Watford’s 22m line for long periods, leading to two tries being conceded.

However, the second half was not a complete washout for Watford, 2 tries of their own coming from a great darting run from Mcgee, and a further from blind side flanker Aaron Conelly, resulting from great support running down the openside wing and an offload from Mark Hill.

Skipper Andy Lee said of the game “Whilst we played champion rugby in the first half, we allowed ourselves to take our foot off the gas in the second.  What should have been a shutout turned into a lucky performance that we only conceded 15 points and not more.  Let’s learn from this game, keep our heads screwed on and carry on what we’ve learnt into the next game.”
