The hosts started strongly, dominating both posession and territory. The Watford pack were strong with the ball in hand, and determined running resulted in significant ground being made. The Stag's backline looked threatening when running the ball, and but for a few unfortunate handling errors Watford would surely have found themselves in front early on. As it was, a war of attrition was fought around the Hatfield 22, with the visitors exhibitting excellent defence to keep the home team at bay. Watford nearly broke through after a charge down by Lee, however the ball was fumbled with the line at the Stag's mercy. Watford were not to be denied, and 5 minutes later got themselves on the scoreboard. An over throw from Hatfield on their lineout was seized upon by the excellent Hicks, who made good ground before offloading to Martin Lee to crash over from close range. Sanchez added the extras to give the hosts a 7-0 lead. The rest of the half passed without incident, and Watford turned around with a 7 point lead.
Hatfield came back into the game strongly, and Watford managed to keep the opposition at bay with a series of strong tackles and excellent counter rucking. Special mention must be given to the back row of Paul Dunlop and Luke Hammill, who yet again excelled defensively, making numerous hits around the pitch. Watford began to get back in the game, and good pressure saw a Hatfield fumble on their own line, allowing Dunlop to touch down for his second score of the season. Watford further extended their lead through Steve James, who had looked threatening all day and thoroughly deserved his score. Hatfield showed excellent heart to come back into the game, and were rewarded with a well worked try midway through the second half. Knowing time was running out, The Stags surged forward in an attempt to secure the 4 try bonus point. Hamill burst through and offloaded to Dunlop, who was seemingly clean through. For reasons known only to himself, the flanker stopped his run mid flight and ran into contact. Good work Paul.
The final score was a fair reflection of a good game which was well contested by both sides. Skipper Flint paid tribute to his sides resolute defence "whilst we were at times slightly sloppy in attack, our defence was outstanding throughout the entire game. I'm struggling to remember a single missed tackle, which is excellent after our previous two league games. I'd also like to thank Hatfield, who travelled to us at short notice. The gesture was hugely appreciated, and all at Watford RFC extend their thanks to them."
Watford will look to continue their good form next week at home to high flying Abbotstonians.
