A mixture of first and second team players comfortably beat Chess Valley this weekend to set themselves in good stead for the seasons run in. Fielding yet another young team (a feature of this years squads), Watford at times played scintilating rugby that was both effective and pleasing on the eye.
Watford have only themselves to blame after missing out on a golden opportunity to edge themselves away from the relegation zone following an event filled draw away to Cuffley. The result was all the more disappointing given the fact the home side played the majority of the game with 14 men, following a straight red to the Cuffley 10.
Watford 1st XV notched up their first win of the season with a tense, hard fought victory over Old Tottonians. In a physical, low scoring match which saw 3 yellow cards the away side snatched victory with a last minute penalty from the boot of Man of the Match Jacob Harris.
Watford 2nd XV looked to build on the previous weeks promising performance by putting on a good display against Hemel 4ths. Skipper Hicks selected a youthful side with a number of players under 21, a feature which has been characteristic of second team selection this season.
Watford missed a golden opportunity to open their account for the season, slipping to a narrow defeat against Pinner & Grammarians. The home team can only blame themselves, having enjoyed huge swathes of territory and possession but once again failing to put points on the board when it mattered.
Watford 2nd XV took a youthful side away to Old Albanians searching for their first win of the season. With a number of players making their senior debut for the club, the game was always going to be difficult given the considerable experience bought to the pitch by the home side.
Watford 1st XV suffered a second successive defeat in their first home league game of the season, loosing to Old Tottonians by 21 points to 5. Despite loosing a number of first team players to injury during the week, the home team produced a gutsy display and were unable to convert considerable second half pressure into points until late on.
Watford played Quintin in their rearranged Herts/Middx 3 league game this week following lasts week’s game being frozen out. Watford securing their first league points of 2009. Quintin started much the better side in the opening quarter scoring two tries and with one convertion took a 12-0 lead. Watford clawed their way back as James Betteley, captain for the day and Man of the Match, scored his first try of the day beneath the posts, conversion missed Watford were 7 points adrift at 12-5 to the visitors.
Watford resumed league action this week with a hard fought but ultimately well deserved 15-13 victory over visitors St. Nicholas Old Boys. The victory was even more impressive due to the wholesale changes made and players playing out of position due to mass unavailability’s.
Watford travelled to Quintin with a much changed team due to injuries and unavailability’s. With traffic causing problems the kick off was delayed for 15 mins. In what was a very scrappy game, with more scrums in one game than most of the season so far.
Watford played Old Merchant Taylors in a friendly fixture arranged when Hatfield cried off due to injury. Both teams fielding a mixture of 1st and 2nd team players, The visitors play their rugby 2 leagues above Watford and were recovering from last weeks loss by 115 – 0 to Hemel Hempstead. This game was always going to be a testing game, especially with Watford missing 7 regular 1st teamers. The opening score of the game went with play and went to the visitors with an unconverted try to lead 5-0. Watford fought back and their first score of the game came from debutant winger John Toy, who score wide out. The conversion from scrum half Simon Maney made the score 7-5 to Watford.
Watford moved up to second place in the league after a hard fought 19 – 5 victory over Cuffley. The battle in the forwards was as tough as was anticipated but the home team managed to win this vital area. The first try was scored by outside centre James Betteley after quick ball was recycled by the forwards and feed out to the backs. Betteley made an outside break and showed pace and strength to score the opening points. The conversion was missed to make the score 5 – 0 to Watford. The rest of the half continued with the forwards working hard to give good ball to the backs but good defence by the away team made the half time score 5 – 0 to Watford.
Watford 2nds season finally kick-off with their first win of the season with a comprehensive victory of Saracens’ Amateurs 2nds. This awaited victory being engineered in the later half of the first half and executed in the second period. For the first 20 minutes Saracens were the stronger side as Watford’s new look team and players came to terms with each other. Saracens deservedly took the lead with an unconverted try after 20 minutes and it looked like Watford would struggle again. Slowly Watford began to come to terms with what lay ahead of them and their forwards started to dominate. It was their forward domination in the last 20 minutes of the first half that set their stall out for the rest of the game. Watford deservedly drew level after 30 minutes with a try from prop Gary Wilson and took the lead with the last play of the first half when Captain George Hicks, returning from suspension imposed last season, powered over close to the post for a converted try for a 12 – 5 lead at half time.
Watford bowed out gracefully against Essex 2 side Millwall in the second round of the EDF Junior Vase as Millwall scored 3 tries in each half.
Watford looked to take last week’s second half display into this week’s league game from the first whistle, against opposition that they have not beaten for some time. The game didn't start in the best of manners for Watford as they had to make a substitution within the first minute, with evergreen Peter Jenkins coming on in the centres for the unlucky Andy Lee. However with his first touch of the ball Jenkins opened the scoring for Watford with a try which was converted by scrum half Simon Maney, to give the home team the perfect start and go into a 7 - 0 lead. With Watford anxious to make sure that they didn't make the same mistakes as last week, they pushed on looking for further scores, which came in the form of tries from debutant James Betteley on the wing and No 8 Martin Lee, with one converted and one missed by Maney to make the half time score 19 - 0 to Watford.
