[i]This charity walk is organised at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore each year and is something that I am involved in. I would like to invite any club members who would be willing to get involved and help on the day with stewarding, running stalls etc. to contact me. Helpers would be required from 9.30 a.m. to no later than 2.00 p.m.
I am also asking for raffle prizes to be donated to the Hospital Trust for our grand raffle on the day. Please contact me if you require anymore information. Many Thanks Pete Nelson, Club Capt...The first sponsored Buttercup Walk took place in June 2003 and raised over £15,000, we have since held this event annually and have raised over £75,000 in total.
The Buttercup Walk 2006 is being held here at the RNOH, Stanmore on Sunday 25th June. Activities will start at 10.30am and the walk is scheduled to start at 12.00 noon with prize giving at 1.30pm. The walk is a great day enjoyed by our patients and their families; there will be rides for the children, a barbeque, refreshments and stalls.
The Walk has been a huge success with over 600 walkers and their families taking part in the 2005 walk helping to raise more than £30,000, as well as donations sent in by patients unable to attend the day. The Buttercup Walk is organised by the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust. Its aim is to raise funds for the direct enhancement and improvement of patient care at the RNOH. This years allocation, 2005/2006 includes a resuscitation training manikin, a new Children’s play area, aids for tetraplegic patients and various equipment for the Spinal Cord Injury Centre, as well as a kitchen used by parents in the Muriel Sands accommodation block.
The Buttercup Walk was named after “Buttercup Day” which was established between the first and second World Wars, the hospital held a Buttercup Day in June each year. During the mid 1930’s children would pick buttercups from around the Hospital site for sale in Central London. With the coming of the second World War the day was postponed; never, until it was revived in 2003.
