Tony Dillon - RIP
« on: January 29, 2008, 06:21:24 PM »

I have just been told my Dick King of Chesham that Tony Dillon past away last week.  Tony and Dick along with a number of other WAtrford RFC members worked tobether at BT.

Tony is a former Watford player who last played some two years ago in the VETS competition at Fullerians.  I played with Tony some 15 years ago.  He served the club well.

His funeral is on the 8th February at 10:30 at St. Michael RC Church, Crown Rise, Garston.

I remember Tony very well as a player, colleague and friend.
We played for many years in the 70's and 80's for Watford 3rds and 2nds and also for BT.
Tony was a quiet and unassuming man, some would say shy. He was always a reliable, punctual and honest player and club stalwart.
I was a founder member of the club in 1973 and Tony joined soon after, I believe after being badgered by me and Steve "bomber" Harris.
In the olden days before cellphones and pc's, players would be notified of games by postcard, telling where to meet, when and who the opposition was. In those days, many teams were abreviated or were known by initials, CAV, BA, OA's and so on. If there was no game scheduled for the Saturday the Club rep would go the fixture beureax on a Friday night to arrange, an often disasterous fixture. One week we got a card saying we were playing TBA, (to be arranged), and Tony swore blind we beat them 20-10 last season!!

The funeral was well attended by many WRFC Old Boys and many of his work mates. We all went to the Tudor Arms for a long long while  after and drank a toast to Tony.
